Caleb Murray – Cello

Episode 10 || 8 October 7PM

Caleb began playing the cello at the age of 5 after hearing the instrument appear in his favourite Powderfinger song. He also plays piano, double bass and bassoon, but none of these instruments ever took his interest in the same way. Born in Bendigo and having lived in north east Victoria all his life, the move to ANAM in 2018 was his first chance to live in a big city after finishing year 12 in Albury at the end of 2017.

Caleb is a keen orchestral cellist, having spent 4 years of his life travelling an 8 hour round trip to play in the Melbourne Youth Orchestra as principal cellist and to have lessons with MSO cellist Rohan de Korte. He has participated in a range of Australian Youth Orchestra programs and has traveled with the orchestra through Europe and China on their International Tour this July. He was a finalist in the Melbourne Recital Centre’s Bach Competition in 2015 and was awarded the Clifford Hocking Scholarship in the same year.

Living in Albury has allowed Caleb to participate in a wide range of musical activities in 2017, such as playing the role of Marius in Livid’s production of Les Miserables in October, as well as a local string quartet, amongst other things.

Caleb thrives in the world of Bach and Haydn but also enjoys the sounds and colours of modern Australian music.

He will be performing:

  • Bach- Solo Cello Suite 5
  • Bloch- Solo Cello Suite no 1, Mvt 1,2
