We’re coming towards the end of the heats for Season 1 of The Talent 2022! Episode 9 is an all-brass affair, with performances by trumpeter Flynn Seward and trombonist Michael Lo. You’ll hear them perform live to air a wonderful programme with works including Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto and Piazzola’s Ave Maria, and then receive immediate feedback on air from professional industry mentors.

Trumpeter Flynn Seward
Flynn is a student at The University of Melbourne undertaking a Bachelor of Science and concurrent Diploma in Music, studying trumpet under Joel Brennan. He has played trumpet for 12 years, now with a focus on the classical trumpet repertoire. Flynn was a member of the Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony for four years, being principal trumpet for 2 years. He has played with other community ensembles including the Moreland City Band.
Flynn attended Princes Hill Secondary College and was a member of a number of jazz and big band ensembles later receiving the academic award for outstanding achievement in units 3/4 music performance. Recently he has begun teaching and giving public performances. He enjoys playing more lyrical compositions, particularly early 20th century/ romantic era pieces. Flynn’s aim is to continue enjoying the trumpet and to challenge himself with new repertoire and genres, including the technical aspects of other ‘trumpet family’ instruments such as the piccolo trumpet.

Trombonist Michael Lo
As an orchestral trombonist, Michael has worked with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Australian International Productions Orchestra as a guest musician. He is also a former member of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra and studied at 24th Hamamatsu Wind Instrument Academy (2018) in Japan. Playing solo recitals and chamber music are also integral to Michael’s performing ambitions.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Music degree (Honours) from the University of Melbourne and graduated with first class honours. He looks forward to pursuing graduate work in performance training and music pedagogy. His past teachers include Don Immel, Jessica Buzbee, Ben Lovell Green, Ming Yeung Li and David Palmer.
