Episode 10 Guest Mentor: Peter Neville

Our guest mentor for Episode 10 is Peter Neville!

Percussionist and composer Peter Neville has had a career spanning four decades and embracing a wide range of musical genres ,from pop music and jazz, to orchestral and contemporary music. 

As percussionist of the ELISION ensemble for thirty-five years he has premiered hundreds of new works, recorded a score of CD’s and undertaken dozens of national and international tours. 

His orchestral experience has included the Melbourne Symphony’s “Tour De Force ” with Elton John and their Japan tour , regular work with Orchestra Victoria and a guest appearance with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London. 

He has performed in dozens of musicals including “Cats” and ” The Phantom Of The Opera” and was musical director for the Australian tour of “Tap Dogs”. His compositions for theatre have included Love Suicides for Playbox (now Malthouse ) by the acclaimed play-wright John Romeril , Daze Of Our Lives by Mary Leunig for Handspan Theatre and Fix It Alice for Arena. 

Other compositions have included the radiophonic work After Hildegard for the ABC and a saxophone quartet Compendium which premiered at the World Saxophone Congress in Glasgow. 

He is highly active in the area of chamber music and has been a member of groups including Jouissance, The David Chesworth Ensemble, The Raga Dolls Salon Orchestra, Six Degrees Ensemble and the Bolt ensemble as well as a regular contributor to organisations including Arcko Symphonic, The Melbourne Composers’ league and Chamber Made Opera. 

His CD recordings range from classical and orchestral to pop CD’s with Deborah Conway and Peter Andre and his film credits include “The Man From Snowy River “, “The Road To Nhill ” and “Pictures and Music”. 

As an educator, he was Head of Percussion at the VCA and Melbourne Conservatorium Of Music from 2000-2020 and was appointed the inaugural Head Of Percussion at “The Australian National Academy Of Music ” in 2013, a position he still holds .
