This week, we welcome oboist Briana Leaman as guest mentor for Episode 9.
American-Australian oboist Briana Leaman has performed and taught throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In addition to her work as a freelance oboist with groups including Orchestra Victoria and Victorian Opera, Briana is an avid soloist and chamber musician, and in 2021 released a recording with ABC Classic of Luke Severn’s and other lines with pianist Yasmin Rowe and saxophonist Joseph Lallo (Duo Obax), which has since become a fixture on ABC Classic’s ‘Best of Australian Classical Music’ playlist. Upcoming engagement highlights for 2023 include a recital at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Bangkok, a curated Lunch Hour Concert at Melba Hall with Yasmin Rowe, and Graeme Koehne’s oboe concerto, In-Flight Entertainment, with the Australian Doctor’s Orchestra.
Briana is the oboe teacher at Loreto Mandeville Hall and is a tutor for the Chamber Music and Musical Perspectives subjects at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music where she is also the Chamber Music Assistant. She is an active member of the Australian Double Reed Society and serves as the Victorian State Representative on the ADRS National Committee. Briana recently completed her PhD (Music Performance) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, and received her MMusPerf from the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (Sébastien Giot and Christian Schmitt) and her BMus(Perf) from the University of South Carolina (Dr. Rebecca Nagel). Briana is proud to be a Rigoutat Artist and plays on a Model ‘J’ oboe.
