Episode 3: pianist Kingsley Hsu and harpist Audrey Chen

The episode that has our sound engineers the most excited has arrived as Audrey Chen brings her harp into the 3MBS studio tomorrow night. Audrey will perform after pianist Kingsley Hsu before each performer receives live to air feedback from Evan Lawson and guest mentor Marshall McGuire. Kingsley Hsu is an 11-year-old pianist studying at Caulfield Grammar School.  He has been playing piano since the age of six. He enjoys playing Classical and Romantic works; his favourite composers are Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, Liszt and Bach.  Kingsley was awarded AMEB AMusA in piano last year under the guidance of Dr Kenji Fujimura, and is currently preparing for his LMusA.

Kingsley has recently received numerous awards from local and international piano competitions, including eight 1st Prizes, thirteen 2nd Prizes, an Artist of the Year Second Prize (Instrumentalists & Singers) and Category Winner (All Instruments). As First Prize winner in the Golden Classical Music Award International Competition he now has an opportunity to perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall.  In 2022 Kingsley performed extensively, including three appearances at Federation Square Deakin Edge.  

Kingsley is also a violinist and oboist, and is very active at school, being a House Captain, Endeavour Award winner, member of a musical band, choir, percussion ensemble, dance club, a piano trio and various school productions.  

Apart from music, Kingsley loves animals, enjoys playing badminton, soccer, tennis, roller skating and swimming.”

  • J. S. Bach: Prelude and Fugue No.3 in C sharp major BWV 848
  • F. Chopin: Etudes Op.25, No.2 in F Minor
  • L. V. Beethoven: Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp Minor, Op.27 No.2 “Moonlight”1st Movement
  • W. A. Mozart: Sonata No.9 in D Major, K. 311 I. Allegro con spirito


Harpist Audrey Chen

Audrey is a 15 year old violinist and harpist. Her first instrument was the violin which she started when she was 4 years old and is currently learning with William Hennessy AM. Audrey’s passion and love for music drew her towards the angelic sound of the harp. 

She started learning the harp in 2016 and unfortunately stopped in 2020 because a family member was unwell. She picked up the harp again in mid-2022 and is currently studying with Dr Jacinta Dennett. Audrey was accepted on harp for the Melbourne Youth Orchestra flagship orchestra in 2020. Audrey has performed with the Combined School Orchestra on harp in 2022 and is currently preparing for her AMusA exam. Audrey also attended the Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp and Young Symphonist program in 2022 on violin. She has also played with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra and ACO academy (also on violin). 

At school, Audrey is an active member of Boaden Orchestra and Hewison String Orchestra as well as many choirs and chamber ensembles. She also participates in many sports including cricket, hockey, soccer and athletics.

  • A.Zabel: Murmure de la cascade
