Episode 6: oboist Yuki Markwell and pianist Jade Cheung

For our sixth episode we’re delighted to welcome oboist Yuki Marwell and pianist Jade Cheung. They will perform programmes featuring the music of Bozza, Carmichael, Debussy, Schubert, and Kats-Chernin before receiving on-air feedback from mentors Dean Sky-Lucas and Briana Leaman. Oboist Yuki Markwell

Yuki is a 14 years old oboist. She started playing the oboe at the age of 9 but stopped after two years due to a wrist injury.  She picked up the oboe again in 2021, studying under Seng Tong and Jeffrey Crellin.  She is currently studying under Josh De Graaf and is preparing for AMEB AMusA exam later this year. Yuki is also an accomplished pianist. She achieved AMEB AMusA with distinction at the age of 12.  

Yuki participated in various local instrumental competitions this year and received over 15 awards across Ringwood Eisteddfod, Boroondara Eisteddfod, Victorian Bands League, Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod and Monash Youth Festival. The highlight was awarded the Most Promising Senior Woodwind Player at Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod, while still being a junior player.

Yuki loves playing in ensembles. She is a member of four ensembles at school. She often performs at school concerts, assemblies and open days. Yuki won a school song writing competition when she was in Year 5.  

Outside music, Yuki enjoys sports, including rowing, swimming and bike riding.

Pianist Jade Cheung

Jade Cheung, age 15, is a passionate music student from Melbourne, Australia. She started learning the Piano when she was 7 years old. Jade is blessed with the care and inspirations of her music teachers over the years.

Jade is currently studying at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS), which is renowned for its exceptional music programs and instructors. She has recently awarded the AMUSA in Piano. She is currently learning the Piano, Oboe and Flute while pursuing her AMEB Grade 8 in the Violin.

Jade absolutely enjoys the experience of music competitions, as it gives her the opportunity to showcase her talent and connect with others who share her passion. She has participated in eisteddfod competitions and as well as international competitions. She will continue to participate in upcoming opportunities so more people can hear and connect with her music. With the support and guidance of her teachers at VCASS, Jade is poised to continue developing her musical skills and pursuing her love of music.

  • F.Schubert: Impromptu Op. 90 no. 2 in Eb Major
  • E.Kats-Chernin: Russian Rag
