
For our second episode of the season, we welcome cellist Mahalia Shelton and violinist Louise Turnbull to the studio. Mahalia and Louise will perform live to air programmes including works by Walton, Mountford, and Bach before receiving feedback from mentors Tamara Smolyar and Molly Kadarauch. Cellist Mahalia Shelton
Cellist, Mahalia Shelton moved to Melbourne to begin high school at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS) after spending her childhood in the regional town of Mansfield. Here, she studies with Rosanne Hunt and is now in year 12. Over the last couple of years, Mahalia has loved being a part of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra where she is currently principal cellist. She has attended various Australian Youth Orchestra programs such as last year’s flagship Winter Season in Sydney and most recently the National Music Camp in January where her love for orchestral music thrives. Mahalia’s dream is to be part of a professional orchestra one day. In 2023, Mahalia was a finalist in the Melbourne Bach Competition held at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

Violinist Louise Turnbull
Louise Turnbull is a student of Sophie Rowell at the Australian National Academy of Music, where in 2023 she was awarded the St. Silas Prize for the Most Outstanding First Year Recital. Louise has performed as soloist most recently with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra as part of the Ears Wide Open concert series. Louise has also performed with the Preston Symphony, Frankston Symphony and Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra. Louise looks forward to performing Brahm’s Violin Concerto in November with the Peninsula Chamber Musicians and performed Bruch’s Violin Concerto with the Australasian Orchestra on February 25th.
