
We are excited to welcome conductor Thaddeus Huang as guest mentor for Episode 4!
Thaddeus Huang is one of Australia’s leading emerging conductors. For the 2020-2021 he served as Assistant Conductor in Residence with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, working with Ludovic Morlot, Benjamin Northey, Johannes Fritzsch, Dane Lam, and Principal Conductor Asher Fisch on all programs of the season.
His role encompassed conducting young person’s, pops, and WASO/WAYO side-by-side concerts, and he made his mainstage debut in the MACA Classics series, garnering four-and-a-half stars from Limelight Magazine. He accompanied the orchestra through all major West Australian Opera and West Australian Ballet seasons, covering Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, The Barber of Seville, The Marriage of Figaro and Cav & Pag.
During the 2018-2019 seasons Thaddeus worked on projects at the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Masters series, assisting programs of Bruckner, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov with Mark Wigglesworth and Nicholas Carter. He was assistant to Carter for the Australian premiere of Brett Dean’s acclaimed opera Hamlet, and in 2019 he made his subscription debut in the ASO’s Mozart at Elder and Out of the CBD series. He prepared the orchestra for Carter for their acclaimed Beethoven Piano Concerto Cycle concerts.
Highlights in recent seasons include Haydn’s The Creation, Carmina Burana, premieres of works by Xilin Wang, Yuankai Bao, Julian Yu, and assisting Muhai Tang at the Harbin Symphony Orchestra’s premiere of Tosca, and at the Shanghai Opera Orchestra.
He has collaborated with Laurence Jackson, Harry Bennetts, Ashlyn Timms, Mark Gaydon, Nicholas Young, Yelian He, Glenn Riddle, Ke Lin, presenters Thea Rossen and Graham Abbott, musicians of ANAM and many others. Abroad he has conducted the Moravian Philharmonic, Brasov Philharmonic, Shenyang Symphony, Venice Chamber Orchestra, musicians of the Orchestre de Paris, and the Royal Academy of Music.
As a passionate advocate for young musicians, Thaddeus has toured China with the Australian New Goldberg Orchestra, working with young performers in most major cities on these celebrated exchange concerts. He has also tutored conducting at the University of Melbourne, conducted new student works at the Victorian College of the Arts, and continues to work with young musicians on the Mornington Peninsula through the Frankston Symphony Orchestra’s outreach.
Thaddeus has worked frequently with the Australian Youth Orchestra, assisting Sir Mark Elder, Giordano Bellincampi and Ariel Zuckerman, as well as conducting rehearsals, new music, and ensembles. He most recently worked with AYO and Artology to record a series of compositions by young Australian composers for their 2022 Fanfares project.
Thaddeus graduated Honours in composition from the University of Melbourne, under the mentorship of Brenton Broadstock, Stuart Greenbaum and Barry Conyngham; his work has been recorded by the MSO, ABC, and Melba Records. He draws on a breadth influences, having studied with Jorma Panula, Daniel Harding, Daniele Gatti, Nicholas Braithwaite, Luke Dollman, Benjamin Zander, amongst others, and is an alumnus of Symphony Australia and a recent graduate of the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide.
