Soprano Suzanne Johnston

We are excited to welcome soprano Suzanne Johnston as guest mentor for Episode 3!

A uniquely versatile artist, Suzanne Johnston frequently appeared on opera, concert and recital stages throughout Australia, as well as in music theatre, cabaret and television. With the Victoria State Opera and Opera Australia (formerly The Australian Opera) she performed over 30 roles in opera, G&S operettas and music theatre, including Eliza in the VSO’s hugely successful production of My Fair Lady opposite Anthony Warlow, and the Page Urbain in Dame Joan Sutherland’s Farewell Australian season of Les Huguenots. 

Internationally, Suzanne made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1989, then appeared as Dorabella opposite Renee Fleming’s Fiordiligi, in Trevor Nunn’s production of Cosi Fan Tutte for the 1991 and 1992 Glyndebourne Festival Opera under both Sir Simon Rattle and Bruno Weil. 

Suzanne has received many accolades, including an ARIA for the CD Perfect Strangers with Judi Connelli;The Sydney Theatre Critics’ Circle award for Operatic Performance of the Year; a MO Award (now known as The Helpmann Awards); Churchill Fellowship; and four Green Room Awards. 

She toured Australia as one of The 3 Divas with Judi Connelli and Jennifer McGregor and performed a season of cabaret in New York with Judi Connelli.

Equally at home on the concert platform, Suzanne has performed a wide variety of repertoire with the Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, West Australian and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. She has several times been a guest artist on the nationally televised Carols in the Domain and Carols by Candlelight, toured for Musica Viva, and frequently performed with the Australian Pops Orchestra. 

Suzanne is a highly respected adjudicator and examiner and currently runs a successful private teaching studio. She is also a Voice Associate Teacher at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at The University of Melbourne.
