Episode 5 Guest Mentor: double bassist Rohan Dasika

Bassist Rohan Dasika

We’re very excited to be welcoming bassist Rohan Dasika as guest mentor for Episode 5!

Rohan is a double bassist with a diverse musical life in Australia and abroad. Since 2022, he has been a member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra double bass section, having previously worked on contracts as Assistant Principal in the same orchestra, as well as in the Frankfurter Opern-und-Museumsorchester. Rohan has also been engaged at many of Australia’s chamber music festivals and venues, often as the result of an association with leading classical accordionist James Crabb. Passionate about the music of his time, Rohan has performed with the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, and was subsequently invited back to Lucerne in 2019 as part of the Orchestra of the Lucerne Festival Alumni. Rohan has also participated in numerous concerts and recordings as a member of ELISION, notably giving the Australian premiere of Liza Lim’s “Table of Knowledge” for solo double bass.

In 2019, Rohan was awarded the Freedman Classical Fellowship, and since then has begun the lifelong work of bringing the South Indian side of his heritage into his music. Rohan has performed for Melbourne’s Carnatic music community in numerous projects convened by the Sangam Festival, as well as at the 2022 Indian Performing Arts Convention (Monash University).

Rohan is a graduate of the Australian National University School of Music, Australian National Academy of Music, and has made study trips to Philadelphia and Vienna, courtesy of an Australia Council ArtStart grant. Between 2017-2019, he relocated to Frankfurt to take a position in the Paul Hindemith Orchesterakademie of the Frankfurter Opern-und-Museumsorchester, while also studying at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt, supported by an Australian Music Foundation Award.
